SIX DIMENSIONS OF NATIONAL CULTURE : HOFSTEDE'S THEORY
Mira Aryuni
1. In your own words, describe the cultural differences between these 2 countries based on the 6 dimensions.
a. Power distance = China tend to accept unequally right between the power holder and non-power holder. Workers will do what their boss telling to do. Workers would expect to be clearly directed by the boss or manager. The relationship is very formal. The US less accept unequally right. It means they realized there is a difference among position but it would not make workers fully dictated by the manager. Their relationship gets along better because they feel comfortable to make their boss as a friend even do a joke.
b. Uncertainty avoidance = the both of US and China tend to accept uncertainty or unknown future. These countries open with a new idea or product and give it a try. That’s why we found many entrepreneurs in these both countries.
c. Individualism vs Collectivism = US got high rank in individualism. It means in US just about me. “Me” satisfy take in the first place. Mostly they have personal space and cold each other. Reward for individual achievement is a must. Different from the US, China more appreciate teamwork. The relation among colleagues is warmer and like a family. Their achievement because of good teamwork.
d. Masculine vs Feminism = US and China tend to same in masculine section. They are loyal and love their job so they will give most of their time into the job. The family puts after work. They will do everything to get the best in their job because show their success is an important thing.
e. Time orientation = China tend to the long-term goal. They believe everything should be clear before they do. These people are the slow decision maker. The US tends to short-term goal. They want everything instant and quick. These people are the quick decision maker.
f. indulgence = China got the low score in indulgence. It means the society tend to pessimism. Their behavior controlled by the norm so they cannot do whatever that satisfy them if it against the norm. The US tends to be free. They can do whatever to satisfy them. Sometimes they out of control and don’t care if it against the laws.
2. In your opinion, what do you think will be the most challenging cultural aspect working with another country and why?
Based on my opinion, the most challenging is individualism vs collectivism. The reason is if another country has the different thought about work achievement it would make difficult for the employer. For example, I tend to work as a team and appreciate team achievement. I usually work with a warm and family vibe in the workplace. When I come to individualism workplace, it will give me pressure. I would not feel get along better with colleagues. Come to the office just for work without true socializing. It will make me feel like the robot and miss precious time while I am working. Furthermore, if that country prefers a man in the workplace. I don’t have a big opportunity for some position.
