Dear
Silent Partner:
The
purpose of this letter to respond about either keep or fire full time
employees. Since economy downturn, our profit was low for a timer period, but
we are currently back on the path to increased profits. I am Mira Aryuni as a
main owner understand that the company needs to decrease the expenses to
increase our profits at this point in our business. I also understand your
position as a main partner in this company. I will try to give some point of views to see
from different perspectives about this case.
From
the business perspective, the main reason to run a business is the motivation
to receive profit. Since our company is a small shop, hiring part time employees
instead of keeping a full time employee may seem more attractive because keep
the cost low. The company also try out new part time employees before hire as a
full employee. The part time employees show enthusiast in first month work.
Jane stated that hiring part time employee give company 5 benefits such as; (1)
Get the skill needed with limited budget (2) Get the experience that company is
struggling to attack (3) Improve diversity and enhance the workforce (4)
Part-time employees can make business agile (5) Part time employees help
employer support over-stretched employee).
In
the other hand, part time employees also have many disadvantages. Based on
Kokemuller 2018, part time can be affected company performance because they
lack experience and commitment. Part time employees tend to absent because they
don’t have full commitment to the company. They perform not as good as full
time employee. They perform minimum standard of the work since they don’t get
the benefit. In addition, turnover part time employees are high means part time
employees leave the company easily.
From the
employee’s perspective, fired is about something bad in their life. No matter
they are full or part time employees. Employees are part of the company. Their
existence represent company as a general. If they perform a good work like good
service means company reputation is also good in society. If they perform a bad
work means the company reputation is also bad in society. The full time
employees get benefit to the company where they perform a good work because
they feel as apart of company. They understand what company wants and serve. In
the other hand, part time employees also fill the empty space and time when the
full time employee cannot fit in. The part time employees work in evening and
weekend shift when full time employees don’t do that. They both need and fill
each other. They work in harmony as a unity in organization. The company that
have both kind of employees usually going well in business and getting profit.
If company fired one of them, the company will lose a part of their foundation.
I
understand that keeping hourly staffs engaged can take a lot of effort
especially for HR department. HR department need to make sure they engaged
properly with such of ways. One of them is make the schedule benefit and
comfortable for both side employer and employees. Keeping staffs engaged helps
to check and keep high-quality workforce management. Engaged workers won’t
arrive to work late on a regular basis because they enjoy coming to work.
Workers who feel engaged are more productive because they see that their
efforts are appreciated. In turn, engaging your hourly employees will not only
increase employee job satisfaction, it will drive growth and improve retention.
From
local official perspective, keeping the unemployment getting low is the goal.
They are trying to avoid layoff as much as they can. They take care if the
company doing something that give disadvantages to employees. Their task is to
make sure the employees get their right. Firing people in that situation is not
good for the company because local official will be against the company.
In
selecting and hiring people, the company needs to look into principle that can
lead the company to make a decision. There are some ethical principles based on
Hosmer that related with this case. Those are principle utilitarian benefits, principle
of individual right, principle of government requirement and principle of long
term self-interest. The principle of utilitarian benefit related because it avoids
the company to take action that not good for society. Firing people is not good
for society because give many bad impacts such as homeless people which is lead
to criminal things. Principle individual right related because the company
cannot take any action that infringes on other’s agreed-upon right. So that if
we fire employee the local official also employee will argue with the company.
Principle of government requirement also related because the company to make
decision based on the law and represent minimal moral standard. If the company
fire full employee after they worked for a quite a while, the company didn’t
show moral and respect to the employee.
Based
on the explanation above, I think the best decision that might be apply is keep
both employee to keep the good production. Part time employee fill the empty
shift such as evening and weekend that full employee cannot make it. The
company might to make an agreement for both employees that they would not get
the overtime payment and work extra hours. This decision created based on
ethical principle. This decision considers the benefit both side company and
employee.
